About UNICEF

Unicef, formerly known as the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, is a United Nations agency responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide. With a presence in 192 countries and territories, it is one of the most widespread and recognizable social welfare organizations in the world. UNICEF's activities include immunizations, disease prevention, treatment for children and mothers with HIV, childhood and maternal nutrition, sanitation improvement, education promotion, and emergency relief in response to disasters. It was established in 1946 as the successor of the United States International Children’s Emergency Fund and has since expanded its mandate to address the long-term needs of children and women, particularly in developing countries. In 1953, UNICEFund became a permanent part of the UN System and changed its name to its current form, while still retaining its original acronym.
